Radiohead Offers New Album For Whatever You Want to Pay.
 | | Radiohead dropped a bomb on the music industry last night, announcing their new album In Rainbows. What's the big deal? Well, first of all, it'll be released in a mere 9 days, catching everyone off guard (it was expected sometime next year) and keeping the tracks from leaking to the web. Secondly, you'll be able to download the album from their official site for any price you want to pay. Yes, it's pay what you want, including free. Really. |
Suck it, RIAA bitches!

Cool, I'd download a legally free album from a group I don't think I've ever heard a song by.

I bought OK Computer on a whim, and hated it. But, for free, who cares?

I know. I just couldn't get into it. I need to give it another shot, because most music I hear for the first time doesn't really strike me.

So? Go download it already!
I'll listen to it soon, and post my review.

Radiohead albums take awhile to grow on me. I really like Hail to the Thief, and I think In Rainbows is a step back to their previous albums. But I'm no good with full reviews.
Right now, Jigsaw Falling into Place stands out as my favorite song.

This was my review for the school newspaper. The only thing I'd add is that I actually enjoyed In Rainbows more than Ok Computer.
Band: Radiohead
Album: In Rainbows
Rating: 9.4 out of 10
I have a confession to make: I’d never listened to Radiohead before I decided to review this album. Of course, I’d heard the singles (“Creep” “Karma Police”) that had become for prevalent that they were practically mainstays on every modern rock station. But was the extent of my Radiohead knowledge. So I decided to ask around – What Radiohead album(s) should I listen to? From this mini-survey I discovered that there seemed to be a divide between Radiohead fans. In one camp were those who loved Radiohead’s older albums, the critically acclaimed Ok Computer as well as their four other releases prior to Hail To The Thief. The other camp was populated by those who considered Hail To The Thief Radiohead’s best work. So as a well intentioned compromise, I decided to listen to both Ok Computer and Hail To The Thief before In Rainbows and see which camp I belonged.
But first the actual review of In Rainbows: “15 Step” – the album’s opener, starts with a drum beat I found myself tapping my foot to immediately. It was clear that this was indeed Radiohead, as soon as Thom Yorke’s distinctive vocals careened over the percussion. And when, almost a minute into the track, the guitar joined in – with a riff that was more reminiscent of Ok Computer than anything from Hail To The Thief – the proof of it being Radiohead was further enforced.
“Nude”, the third track, changes to the slower tempo song (the second track followed the pace of “15 Step”) which Radiohead can pull off so effectively. Throughout In Rainbows this pattern of dropping a slow tempo song right as the album was gaining momentum is repeated. But instead of being a fault, this tactic accentuates the slow tempos and makes the faster paced songs more rousing. The best instance of this is the combination of “Faust Arp” and “Reckoner.” As a one of the slow tempo tracks, “Faust Arp” is both eloquent and compelling, with a powerful use of finger-picked acoustic guitar and strings. Full of nonconventional percussion, catchy guitar riffs, and some well placed piano “Reckoner” feels all the more powerful, not because it was built up to, but because “Faust Arp” broke the pace of the songs preceding it.
One last song worth mentioning is the closer, “Videotapes.” Simple and haunting, “Videotapes” is driven by a synthetic sounding drum loop and a powerful piano part which do well in bringing Yorke’s vocals to the forefront of the track.
After listening to all three albums, I’ve found that instead of joining either of the two camps my own opinion lay somewhere in between. Ok Computer, as a brilliant album, was deserving of all the adoration and acclaim it received. However, what some people missed in their adoration the older Radiohead was that Hail To The Thief was still Radiohead and still great. Yorke may have been right to worry that they would never top Ok Computer, but fortunately for us that doesn’t mean Radiohead won’t be making anything good. In Rainbows continues along those lines. It may not be their best album but it is definitely full of quality songs, instrumental hooks, emotion and worth a listen (or two).

Me either. Although it's not like you wasted money on it, letting it sit.
